Melissa Reid can’t wait for The Solheim Cup to get started with three weeks to go until the event tees off in Ireland.

Speaking in Austria ahead of the UNIQA Ladies Open, presented by Raiffeisen, she said: “I’m excited. I think now the team has been finalised I can get very excited about it. The team shapes up really well and I can’t wait until the week begins.”

Reid was a member of the PING European Junior Solheim Cup team that played in the USA in 2005 and added: “We got treated like royalty. Obviously it’s on a much bigger scale.”

She urged all fans to come out and support the European team to boost the home chances and was relishing the prospect of making her Cup debut having tied for third recently in the Ladies Irish Open at Killeen Castle, The Solheim Cup venue.

“The atmosphere I’m very much looking forward to and I think being in Ireland it’s going to be very special and the crowd will be our 13th man and get behind us, so it’s going to be a special week.”

The European team has not won since 2003 and Reid feels the time is right to take the Cup back.

“We haven’t won for three times. We will go in a bit as under dogs but if we get a bit of team spirit and being in Ireland, it’s going to be a huge home advantage.

“The Europeans have played well at Killeen Castle. A lot of the Americans playing the Irish Open, if you look at the stats, the Europeans have played better that week. It’s going to be a tough battle but it’s going to be a lot of fun and hopefully we can take the trophy home.”

Along with Spain’s Azahara Muñoz, Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall, Germany’s Sandra Gal and Christel Boeljon from the Netherlands, Reid will be one of five Solheim Cup rookies on the European team.

The United States team will have three Cup rookies in Stacy Lewis, Vicky Hurst and Ryann O’Toole.
