Hole in One for Caroline Hedwall on 16

Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall used an ‘easy 8-iron’ to make a hole in one on the 135 metre 16th hole in the second round of the Evian Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Solheim Cup star had been at six-over-par for the tournament after 11 holes, but had an amazing run on the back nine, coming back in 31.

After birdies on holes 12 and 13, she improved to four-over-par, but dropped a shot on the par-3 14th. She then picked up five shots on the last four holes by finishing birdie, hole in one, birdie and birdie. That sealed a second round of three-under-par 68, moving her to level par for the championship with a round to play.

“It was just an unbelievable day. On four I was hitting from a tree and then I make a hole in one on 16. It was a messed up day today, in a nice way!” Hedwall said. “At first I didn’t know where it went and then the crowd started to clap and cheer. I was surprised because it’s been a weird day.

“I’ve been unlucky a couple of times and I felt for sure it would have hit the pin and gone in the water or something, but it went in! I saw the replay when I was up there waiting for the referee to fix the hole.”

She wasn’t worried that she would miss the cut at any point and continued: “I always try to stay confident and usually it pays off.

“I’m eight behind so I’m going to have to go low tomorrow but with this finish it’s definitely possible. I just need to keep the momentum from this round.”

Her twin sister, Jacqueline, who was on the bag, said: “She had been hitting her clubs pretty far today. She’s had three or four holes in one. I’ve had zero! That was pretty cool to see though!”

Like Caroline, Jacqueline also played in the Helsingborg Open in Sweden last week, but her next event is on the LET Access Series in Norway.
