After winning LET Q School for 2009 at La Manga Club by three strokes last January, Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist became a first time winner in June at the McDonald's LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola, the second major championship of the year. She was selected by Alison Nicholas to represent Europe at September's Solheim Cup and earned 2 points on her debut.
In October, she finished second at the Madrid Ladies Masters on the LET, where she shot a career-low 63 in the final round to make a play-off, only to be defeated by Azahara Munoz at the first extra hole.
In November she followed with a second victory at the 2009 LPGA’s season ending LPGA Tour Championship Presented by Rolex.
Here we catch up with the 2009 Ryder Cup Wales Rookie of the Year as she reveals how she spent her winter break.
Anna Nordqvist:
“I had a busy but fun off-season. I returned to Sweden and enjoyed the holidays with my family and friends, which is always a wonderful time for me. I was also nominated for the Achievement of the Year. It was a great honor just to be nominated with some of the best athletes in Sweden and so returned again in mid-January for the Swedish athlete award ceremony Idrottsgalan and spent some more time with the media. Back in the States, after living in Arizona for four years I moved to Florida. I’m closer to my coach there, and it’s easier to get to more tournaments in the States and especially in Europe. Along with all of that I continued to work in the gym and on my game looking forward to the 2010 season, which I hope will be even better than the last one.
My goals for 2010 are no different from every year I’ve been playing, really. Just to continue to improve, to make the next year better than the last one. I love winning tournaments but I don’t think about that as much as what I have to do to win them; what I have to work on to improve my game.”
