Having one golfer in the family talented enough to make it in the world of professional tour golf is pretty amazing, but a brother and sister being able to play at a tournament in the same country in the same week, is very special indeed.
This week in Morocco, there are two sets of siblings fighting it out on the fairways of Rabat and Mohammedia.
Emma Cabrera Bello and Melodie Bourdy are competing at the Lalla Meryem Cup at Royal Golf Anfa Mohammedia, in the town of the same name, while their brothers, Rafael Cabrera Bello and Gregory Bourdy, are teeing up in the Trophee Hassan II, which takes place at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat.
The brothers and sisters reunited at a pro am cocktail evening on the night before the two tournaments on Wednesday.
Emma and Melodie were delighted to see their brothers, while for Rafael and Gregory, the feeling was clearly mutual.
Gregory, who won his third European Tour title at the UBS Hong Kong Open in November 2009, liked the concept of playing at the same time as his sister.
“I think it’s a great idea. I hope next time it’s going to be on the same course, why not? In the majors in tennis they do that so I think it’s possible. It’s great to see that here in Morocco but of course it’s not on the same course but almost the same city. It’s great to see my sister tonight and I think we will both enjoy it here this week.”
Melodie, whose best finish on the LET was second at the Scandinavian TPC in Sweden, added: “I will come to see my brother play in the men’s tournament on Sunday so I think it’s good to have a women’s and men’s tournament at the same time in the same place.
“I will be very happy if he wins. It’s a goal for him because he wants to play the Masters tournament. I know when he wants to sometimes he wins. I would like to win too to win together, brother and sister. I am very happy when he plays well and he is very happy when I play well.”
Gregory added: “Of course Melodie can win. She’s very good. She’s got s nice rhythm; she needs to improve on the Ladies European Tour. She didn’t play very well last year but she is able to do some great things so I hope it will be either this week or one of the weeks soon.”

Rafael Cabrera Bello, from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, echoed those warm sentiments when he said: “I think it’s the first time it’s happened with me as a pro to play the same week in the same country with Emma. We have played two weeks in a row, but this is a new feeling because I will be playing thinking about her as well. We can win any week. It’s just a matter of luck and when we are feeling good. Anything can happen.”
Rafael made his European Tour victory breakthrough in the late summer of 2009 at the Austrian Golf Open, producing one of the great rounds of the year, a final day 60, to storm through the field for victory. Meanwhile, Emma is hoping to break her duck on the LET this week.
“It’s my first time to Morocco. It’s my third season on LET so I’m looking forward to improving my game,” said Emma.
“I feel confident; hopefully my first win is coming soon. There are always some parts of your game you have to improve. I am still working on those parts of my game and can do better.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea for women’s golf. Right now we have to look at different ways of promoting golf for the ladies and having it the same week as the men, there is more information around and its more interesting to have the two events held together. Whatever happens in the men’s will reflect and vice versa. I have my brother playing in that event and having the chance to see him playing on Sunday is a great opportunity for me.
“You have no idea how good it would be (if we both won this week). It would be history, so we’re both willing and hoping to make history out of golf.”
