Getting to know Dr Haruhisa Handa
 Print

The International Sports Promotion Society (ISPS) has become the new title sponsor of the ISPS Handa Portugal Ladies Open, this year.

ISPS is a ‘General Incorporated Association’ based in Tokyo. The organisation was founded by Japanese philanthropist, Dr Haruhisa Handa, who is also its Chairman. ISPS contributes to society through supporting various sporting interests – currently focusing on golf and bowling. In golf, ISPS actively supports disabled golf and the International Blind Golf Association in addition to supporting a number of other charities for people with disabilities.

ISPS is committed to developing golf at every level, and is dedicated to supporting charitable causes within the sporting world.

ISPS also sponsors the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, the ISPS Handa Senior World Championship and the Handa Cup Seniors Maters in Japan. Now, for the first time, it will be using the ISPS Handa Portugal Ladies Open to help promote blind and disabled golf, in its bid to bring the sport to a wider audience.

In a statement, Dr Handa said: “We are delighted to be partnering with the Ladies European Tour once again and it gives us particular pleasure to support this event here at the CampoReal Golf Resort and Spa. This superb Donald Steel designed course will undoubtedly make the perfect setting for a tournament of this stature.

One very important initiative that we are launching this week is the ISPS Handa Japan Relief fund. We have set a target to raise $15 million (USD) to support the relief effort in some of Japan’s most affected communities. We will be raising funds through the work of the ISPS Ambassadors around the world, they all do a fantastic job and we are especially grateful for their work during these extraordinarily challenging times for Japan.

“This effort will be assisted by our latest ISPS Ambassador, Laura Davies who will be in attendance this week and we wish her every success.

“Your support for the Relief Fund would be very gratefully received and will go a long way to helping some of the many hundreds of thousands of Japanese citizens who have been devastated by the disastrous events of March 2011. You can find out more about the Relief effort inside and online at: www.ispsgolf.com.”

In recognition of the devastating earthquake in Japan this March, the LET has asked every player to donate five Euros for every birdie and 10 Euros for every eagle made during the ISPS Handa Portugal Ladies Open to the Official Japan Relief Fund.
