Surf’s up for rookie golfers

Danielle, Filipa and Stacey at Peniche

Stacey Keating and Danielle Montgomery are ‘rookie’ golfers in their first year as professionals on the Ladies European Tour. On Sunday during the ISPS Handa Portugal Ladies Open, they also decided to try their luck as ‘rookie’ surfers courtesy of Peniche Surf Camp.

They had a surfing lesson with the 2008 Portuguese women’s national champion, Filipa Prudêncio, at Baleal (Norte-Lagide) in Peniche, located 30 minutes away from the golf tournament at CampoReal Resort and Spa.

Both live in Australia and so had already had a surfing lesson or two at school so stood up on their boards very quickly. Filipa started the lesson with a range of stretches before practising popping up on the sand. “I am very lucky because they are great students. They have strong bodies and they are very good rookies,” she said.

Stacey, who lives in Cressy, near Melbourne, commented: “It was great fun. It took us a while to get going, I think, but it was great.”

Danielle, who lives in Fremantle, Perth, added: “We went back and forth about 12 times and you just had to keep going, keep falling off, but we stood up in the end, which was great.”

When asked whether golf or surfing was a tougher sport, Danielle and Stacey agreed that surfing was more difficult. Danielle said: “I think surfing is more tiring. Surfing is harder.”

Both Filipa and Antonio Correia, the Mayor of Peniche, who is also a keen surfer, had only tried golf once before, but were keen to learn the game.

“I think we are going to give Filipa a golf lesson next year.  It’s really good to practise here, so we are lucky,” said Danielle. Stacey added: “Next year we will do a trade.”
