Becky Brewerton desperate to make third Solheim Cup appearance

Having earned her third Ladies European Tour title at the Tenerife Ladies Match Play on Sunday, Becky Brewerton is hoping that the victory can spur her on to further tournament success, starting with this week’s Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open at Golf Gerre Losone.

On the fringes of Solheim Cup selection, the Welshwoman hopes that her win will have been a nod to European Captain Alison Nicholas.

Although Cup points were not awarded in Tenerife as it was a non-official event on the Ladies European Tour schedule, the 28-year-old from Abergele currently lies 31.5 points behind fourth ranked Virginie Lagoutte-Clement of France on the European standings. Points are available for top 10 finishes at LET tournaments. A win this week is worth 30 Cup points, with 18 available for second, running down to 3 for 10th place.

The top four players on the European list on 29th August will qualify, followed by the next four from the Rolex World Rankings and four wildcard picks.

Speaking after her victory, Brewerton said: “It’s a shame that points don’t count. Although I’m only one place outside automatic qualification I’m a fair few points behind Virginie Lagoutte-Clement, who is in fourth. I really am going to have to pull my finger out, as it were, in the next few tournaments. I think there’s only five left now before the team is picked, so one of them is the British Open, a major championship, so I’m going to have to start playing well and probably at least win one to have a good chance of getting in.”

Brewerton has made two Solheim Cup appearances, in 2007 in Halmstad, Sweden and in 2009 in Sugar Grove, Illinois, near Chicago. This year’s event takes place at Killeen Castle in Ireland from September 23-25 and Brewerton added: "The main start of the season is coming up with some massive tournaments. I'm absolutely desperate to make the Solheim Cup team so I've just got to try to make as many points as possible."

Brewerton tied for 22nd last year in Switzerland, but feels that she has taken her short game to the next level. Her best performance in Losone was a tie for 10th in 2006.
