Brewerton looking to boost Solheim chances with victory in Ireland

Becky Brewerton from Wales feels that she needs a sensational performance at this week’s Ladies Irish Open hosted by Failte Ireland if she is to earn a place on Alison Nicholas’ European Solheim Cup team.

With the deadline for qualification looming and the team announcement on Monday 29th August, Brewerton feels that a victory is needed this week at Killeen Castle in Ireland if she is to impress the skipper and earn a wildcard pick for the main event from September 23-25.

“I’m hitting the ball as well as I have been all year. I’m trying to get my game plan. I like the course and I think it suits my game. It is quite similar for me this week and last Solheim year. I know I’ve got to play well and probably win I would have thought to have a good chance. It was similar last time when I was struggling to make the team, went out to Spanish Open and knew I needed to win and I did so fingers crossed,” said Brewerton, who represented Europe at The Solheim Cup in 2007 and 2009.

With her short game coach, Jussi, based at Killeen Castle and her Irish caddie Shane Codd a regular visitor, she feels at home on the Jack Nicklaus designed course, having tied for 23rd at the venue in the 2010 Irish Open.

“I really like it. The real challenge here are the greens: they are very slopey and you can get some really big breaking putts and if you get yourself on the wrong side of the pin leaving yourself a downhill putt, it can be very tricky so you’ve got to be strategically quite good.

“The fairways are pretty wide; the shots in aren’t too bad but you have to be on the right portion of the green, so it’s a real challenge.

“It’s obviously perfect preparation it’s within six or seven weeks of the event and the course will be playing fairly similar hopefully. Hopefully the weather won’t go too bad over the next few weeks. It’s a bit of preparation. Obviously Sophie won here last year so hopefully one of the European players will win the tournament. I think it will be a good marker for Ally to see which players enjoy the course and will probably help her a bit with her decision.

“It’s brilliant. There is going to be a huge buzz about the event and I think it will bring a bit of tension as well to some people. There are a lot of people still trying to make the team, so it’s a perfect situation really. I think it’s a perfect time and place for Ally to get to assess the players and obviously there are an awful lot of potential players playing this week.”

Brewerton won the Tenerife Ladies Match Play in June, but no Cup points were awarded as it was a non-official Ladies European Tour event.

She has since had a couple of disappointing weeks at the Evian Masters and Ricoh Women’s British Open, where she missed the cut due to ‘a couple of bad mental decisions’, but will be fully focused this week.
