Lacoste player Sophie Giquel-Bettan reviews her season
 Print

The 2007 Ladies Open de Portugal champion from Valence in France, currently ranked 21st on the Henderson Money List, reflects on the 2011 season and looks ahead to 2012 and beyond.

How do you assess your 2011 season?

I am pretty happy with it, even if I feel that I could have done better and that I missed some opportunities. I still have Suzhou and Dubai to improve my ranking.

What have been the highlights?

For sure, my second place in Switzerland, firstly because I earned lots of money and also because it helped me qualify for the Ricoh Women’s British Open. Then the Open was a great experience too, it was unbelievable to tie for 13th before the last round, unfortunately my last round was not what I was expecting but I learned a lot from it.

Were there any difficult times?

Oh yes, especially the first part of the season until Portugal and Germany. I had two tough years in 2009 and 2010 and 2011 didn't start well so it was really hard to keep the confidence and still believe in myself.

What is your focus towards the end of this season and how do you plan to achieve it?

My goal is to play well in Dubai because the prize money is very high and I really like this golf course. For me this is the start of the 2012 season.

What are your plans over the winter and will you be working on your game or taking time out after Dubai?

I will go for five weeks in Florida before Dubai to prepare for this event and after that I will take three weeks of holidays in France and then start practicing again before Australia.

Is there anything you have learned that you will use next season?

Yes: I have to stay focused on myself, don't look at the others, improve my own game and do my best all the time. The ranking is just a result of all of this.

What are your plans for 2012?

I would like to play more majors and perform in them. Then I will go to LPGA or Japan Tour Q School.

You are building a house – how enjoyable or difficult has this been to organise whilst playing golf?

It was pretty easy because a company built about 60 houses so once you have chosen your house you just need to choose the floors and the kitchen. The company is taking care of everything else. I am very excited to move in this new house.

Do you have any other hobbies outside golf or any forthcoming plans?

There are so many things that I would like to do (skiing, sky diving...) but I am always scared of getting injured, so right now I like spending times with friends and family, going to the cinema, shopping, snorkelling and the beach.

What is it like travelling with your husband Axel all the time and having him as a caddie?

It is great we are sharing all these good moments together: we are very lucky. Sometimes it can be hard also you have to make the difference between your husband and your caddie and it's not easy all the time. But I still think it's even harder for him than for me.

He is a twin. Have you ever confused him with his brother?

No his brother got a beard and for me they look so different.

You made a music video earlier this year. How did it come about?

We watched the one with the (PGA) guys at the player lounge in Switzerland during a rain delay and we all thought we have to give them an answer. Axel's brother owns a company where they do movie so it was easier for us.

Would you like to make more videos?

Yes for sure it would be so much fun but I just need the money.

What else would you like to achieve in your career?

Exploit my full potential.
