Getting to know Chinese professional Yu Yang Zhang

Yu Yang Zhang is one of three Chinese players to have qualified for the Ladies European Tour’s Final Qualifying School for the 2012 season at La Manga Club and the 20-year-old from Henan hopes to become one of China’s first representatives on the LET.

A Quick 9 with Yu Yang Zhang

Why do you want to come to play on the Ladies European Tour?

The LET is high level and has a lot of good players and if I can play on the LET I can get on the Rolex World Rankings. We are on the Chinese national team and we want to play in the 2016 Olympic Games and we must have a world ranking.

How did you prepare for this tournament?

We played two Ladies European Tour events in China and I think we prepared last year from October until coming here. We practised for about eight hours a day on the long game, short game and fitness. I think we practised the short game the most before we came here. I played two LET and maybe 10 or 11 CLPGA Tour events before I came here.

What are your expectations for 2012?

First is to get the full card at Q School to play on the LET and then maybe go to the JLPGA to qualify in July and play on the China LPGA also.

If you qualify for the LET, what is your goal?

My goal is to get into the top 30 on the money list and in the Chinese tournaments my goal is to win because this is my second year and also get the LPGA of Japan card.

What is your lowest round?

67 (-5)

What is the best part of your game?

Is there any yardage of shots you prefer?

I like 80 yards.

What is the weakest part of your game?

My irons: my greens in regulation is a little bit low. If I can hit 13-15 greens every round, my score will get lower.

What is your driving average?

235 yards.

What is your putting average?

30, 29 sometimes.

Have you had any hole in ones?

Not yet!

Do you have any nicknames?

My English name is Janice. My friends call me ‘Piggy’ in Chinese. I don’t mind because I had this name for a long time.  In Cantonese, spoken in South China, my name sounds like ‘pig’.

Do you have any superstitions?

I don’t play with balls with number 4 on because in Mandarin, it is pronounced like ‘death’.

Any lucky number?

I like to play with balls numbered 1 and 3.

What languages do you speak?

Cantonese, Mandarin and English.

I’m in my last year at Guandong University of Foreign Studies and I will continue until my Masters. We learned English at primary school, but just letters and simple sentences. Last year I went to America to practice golf for two months at the Gary Gilchrist Academy in Florida and I learnt a lot of English there.

Who are your golfing heroes?

Rory McIlroy and Na Yeon Choi.

Who is on your team?

My three golf coaches from the China national team are Raymond Huang, Michael Dickie and Shi Hu. The fitness coach is Zhao Shuai and the manager is Li Qing Hua.
