We meet China’s golfing teen Xin Wang
 Print

Getting to know the 17-year-old from Guangzhou, who is one of three Chinese professionals to have progressed to LET Final Qualifying School at La Manga Club. All three hope to become China’s first representatives on the Ladies European Tour.

Why do you want to come to play on the Ladies European Tour?

Europe is a beautiful place to visit and I love tournament play.

How did you prepare for this tournament?

I played in Sanya and Suzhou in the two Ladies European Tour events in China and I think I did pretty okay. I just made one of the cuts. In December I played in some golf tournaments, including the China Open and I played okay, finishing 36th. I worked for around six hours a day on the practice range and did physical training and mental training also.

What are your expectations for 2012?

I was hoping first of all to make the card here. I’m hoping that I can make as many cuts as I can in 2012: all of them and see if I can win one of the tournaments. My goal would be winning one of the professional tournaments. One in China would be great.

What is your lowest round?

68.

What is the best part of your game?

I think everything is just so equal. Everything is quite the same. I think that is one of the greatest parts of the game: no weakest part.

What is your driving average?

220-230 yards.

What is your putting average?

31.

Have you had any hole in ones?

Two.

What is your favourite course?

In China, I don’t have a favourite and this is my first time in Europe so the first courses I have played in Europe are at La Manga Club.

Do you have any nicknames?

My English name is Amy. My friends call me Xin.

Do you have any superstitions?

Not really.

Any lucky number?

No.

What languages do you speak?

Chinese and English.

Education?

I’m in my last year of high school in Guangzhou. I spent the last two years at the Hank Haney School in Hilton Head Island in Carolina in the United States and I learned English there.

Any plans to attend university?

I will probably go to university in China but I’m still thinking about it.

Who are your golfing heroes?

Luke Donald: I would like to putt like him. His putting is awesome and no three putts. Yani Tseng is from Taiwan and we kind of know each other since I was young. It’s more like my goal to be like her.

Who is on your team?

My three golf coaches from the China national team are Raymond Huang, Michael Dickie and Shi Hu. The fitness coach is Zhao Shuai and the manager is Li Qing Hua.
