Bourdys seek rare family double
 Print

The chances of seeing the name Bourdy on a leader board in Morocco this week will be higher than normal with European Tour star Grégory Bourdy competing in the Trophée Hassan II just along the road from his sister Mélodie, who is playing for the Lalla Meryem Cup on the Ladies European Tour.

The French siblings both participated in a golf clinic organised by their sponsor Lacoste at Golf de l’Ocean in Agadir on Wednesday.

The venue is hosting the women professionals in the 72-hole event starting Thursday, while the men will be playing less than a mile away at Golf du Palais Royal.

The tournament will give the Bourdys the unique opportunity to play in the same city during the same week and will ensure that they get to spend some down-time together whilst doing the job they love.

“It’s unusual and the only time in the year when we do this so it’s lovely. It should be like this every week,” said Grégory. “Unfortunately, it just happens once a year. I practice sometimes with her in Bourdeaux. It’s nice to play, not on the same course, but almost in the same tournament in the same place, so we can see each other in the evenings and sometimes during the day.”

Mélodie added: “It’s great to play together because we can dine together. All the year we don’t see each other a lot so to play the same tournament in the same week at the same time is fun.”

While Grégory is a three-time tournament winner on the European Tour – most recently at the 2009 UBS Hong Kong Open – Mélodie will be seeking her first victory at the Lalla Meryem Cup in her sixth season on the Ladies European Tour. However, the siblings insisted that there would be no family feud should their names both top the leader boards on Sunday.

In fact, Grégory said: “I would like to see my sister win because she plays wonderful and I hope for the best for her. There is not at all a competition between us. I hope she is going to play very good and I try to do my best also. It would be fantastic if one day we win the same tournament in the same week.”

Mélodie was a little more competitive and said: “He helps me a lot but I try to beat him so it’s good. I hope to win. For him, I think it’s easier than for me, but maybe it’s my week.”

The Lalla Meryem Cup gets under way from 8am local time on Thursday and the defending champion Zuzana Kamasova of Slovakia will start from the 10th at 8.50am. She is playing with 21-time LET champion Trish Johnson and the 2010 event winner Anja Monke as part of a marquee group.
