Veronica Zorzi turns course designer

Italian professional golfer Veronica Zorzi has added another string to her bow with the news that she recently designed a nine-hole golf course for her home town Verona.

The course is yet to be constructed and the project management team are searching for investment, but Veronica revealed her new passion in a press conference during the Raiffeisenbank Prague Golf Masters.

“I just designed a new golf course in Verona. Its nine holes with a driving range and very nice in down town and I just cross fingers and hope they are going to build that. It’s just a project but it was nice to design nine holes. I want to have my academy over there in the future and it should be nice, so it’s my dream,” she said.

“At present there is not a name, it is just a project. The town said that they wanted to invest in golf and have one where I live in Verona with nine holes, academy and I mean, gymnasium, a big centre with also a big hotel. They just asked me to design nine holes so it was amazing. It needs a lot of money to create and depends who is going to invest.”

The two-time French Open champion added that she has designed a test for golfers of all abilities.

“I designed that with many tee boxes so it will be tough if you play on the back and pretty much easy for the beginners if you play in the front. I put a lot of tees because it’s just nine holes so if you want two rounds you can play different distances.

“It’s a kind of links course because it’s a very flat area so you have to make a lot of mounds and the greens are undulated. I wanted to have pretty high grass and bunkers in the right spots.”

Veronica has been playing on the Ladies European Tour for 10 years, since 2002 and her most successful season was 2005 when she first won the Open de France at Le Golf D’Arras and finished third on the money list. Her 2006 season was also extremely impressive and she defended her title at the same venue, before ending the year placed fifth on the rankings.

Since then, she has struggled with a career-threatening shoulder injury but has now returned to prime condition and has recently posted strong results in Holland, Slovakia and Switzerland.
