Tandi Cuningham eyes a long awaited defence

The South African Women’s Open takes place at Selborne Park in KwaZulu-Natal from July 13 to 15. Tandi Cuningham won the event when it was last played in 2009 at Parkview Golf Club in Gauteng. The WPGA caught up with Tandi for a Q & A.

1. What stands out in your memory of your SA Open win? My fondest memory of the SA Open win for me is the great scores I shot the first two rounds, 63, 66 for a -15 total.

2. Any interesting or noteworthy moments from that victory? The final round had many interesting moments as I have never been as nervous as I was that day! A noteworthy moment from the event was having my husband Paul with me that week. It was great to work as a team and achieve the win in the end.

3. What's your season been like so far? My season so far has been good. I finished tied second in my first event of the season, the Ladies Moroccan Open in March which has been the highlight so far. I have also had a 14th place finish in Slovakia and tied 20th in Czech Republic.

4. What or who has helped you turn it around after a difficult season last year?
Three things have changed for me since last season. I did some fantastic work with golf guru Dr Karl Morris in August last year which really helped my mental game. I have no sponsor this year, which was putting me under pressure last season, and finally I have gone to a broom putter. I think these three ingredients have been the change for me.

5. Have you played Selborne before? Yes, once many many years ago when I went on golf tour when I was in high school.

6. How good are you in the wind? I actually enjoy the wind and the challenge it presents. Funnily enough, I won more titles as an amateur at the coast than I did inland.

7. What are you looking forward to for this event? This coming week I am looking forward to playing an event on home soil again.

8. What does the tournament mean to you? The SA Open is always a unique and special event for me and I am very excited about it now being a co-sanctioned event with LET.

9. Anything else you want to say? All I can say is that I hope a local player takes the trophy this week! Maybe me!
