World No14 Azahara Muñoz from Spain is the second highest ranked European in the Evian Masters field for 2012 behind sixth ranked Suzann Pettersen and was feeling confident ahead of the event.
How did you prepare for the Evian Masters?
The last two weeks I’ve been off so after the US Open I took a week off which was much needed because we had been playing a lot of tournaments and last week I went home (to Malaga) and practised with my coach quite hard so I’m really excited to be playing tomorrow.
What do you think about the changes that have been made to the course?
There haven’t been many changed made yet. Just four holes are a little longer so I like longer courses, so I’m really happy with the changes.
Does the fact that this tournament is about to become a major change something for you?
I think, what it changes, is that people take it more seriously, like more media and stuff. It’s a normal tournament so every week I try to give 100 per cent no matter if it’s a major or not, so I just want to keep doing the same.
Do you think there has been an evolution in the relationship between golf and fashion?
I think so, I think more in Europe and especially in this event. Players are dressing cuter and cuter every time so I think it’s good for golf too.
Is there on a certain day a certain outfit or accessory that you wear?
I have my lucky outfit so you know sometimes I wear my white shorts and pink shirt. Maybe I will wear that on Sunday, I don’t know. You know, Lacoste is very classic but I like it, so that’s what I wear.
So does what you wear depend on how you play?
I guess so! You don’t want to waste your lucky outfit!
How do you rate your season?
I’m really happy. I always have a slow start but I won one tournament and then finished second two times and third twice so I’m really happy, playing much better, so hopefully it keeps going.
Are you feeling confident about your chances at the Evian Masters?
I’m hitting the ball really well but this course is really tight, you know. You have to hit really good shots every time and even hitting the green is tough because the greens move a lot and if you miss the green you are pretty much screwed, so you never know but I’m hitting the ball really well and probably better than ever so I don’t want to say anything but I’m happy with my game.
How is the rough?
It’s shorter than last year so it’s easier. If you miss the fairway it’s not so bad. Last year the fairway was quite thick.
You said you like the changes.
I do. I don’t like 14 because it was already long enough and they made it even longer but it is what it is and I might as well like it because they are not going to do what I like.
Number nine is longer, used to be reachable and now is pretty close to being reachable. And they changed number two, a little longer, I kind of like that one.
What will you do after this?
I’m going home for a week and then back to the States.
What have you been working on at home?
I never really see my coach because I am in the States and he is back home so I saw him Monday and Wednesday and keep working on my swing and my short game.
