Q&A with The Solheim Cup Team Captains
 Print

With The 2013 Solheim Cup less than a year away, both captains and a few potential Solheim Cup team members have gathered in Parker, Colo. at Colorado Golf Club for a media day. They all will have a chance to check out the course and the captains are planning out other fine details as the date draws nearer.

LPGA.com caught up with both the captains to find out how the planning process has been going and what they are currently working on.

MEG MALLON – U.S. SOLHEIM CUP CAPTAIN

Q. What’s one word to describe how it has been as a captain so far?
A. Exhilarating

Q. A lot of people don’t know all the behind-the-scenes stuff a captain works on. Can you tell us what you are currently working on?
A. Clothing. Year out media day. Yardage books. Following players.

Q. What has been your easiest duty so far?
A. Watching all the American players play great golf.

Q. What has been your hardest duty so far?
A. Answering e-mails. I’d rather be outside.

Q. After the Solheim Cup media day what’s the next big task awaiting you?
A. Just getting the week organized as far as scheduling and getting every detail taken care of. I want to get everything taken care of so that the players don’t have to worry about anything and they can just go out there and play golf.

Q. I know it is early but have you started putting any thought into your captain’s picks?
A. I’m definitely putting things into my memory bank. The top five spots are pretty much a lock and things are wide open after that. I’m watching the rest of the player’s performances at all the tournaments.

Q. How often do you track potential player’s results?
A. On a weekly basis.

Q. How will your experience as a player help you as a captain?
A. It helps just knowing that everyone approaches things differently. Some players want to play practice rounds on the golf course and some others feel like they don’t need to play as much. I’m getting to know the players and what makes each of them tick.

LISELOTTE NEUMANN – EUROPEAN SOLHEIM CUP CAPTAIN

Q. What’s one word to describe how it has been as a captain so far?
A. Fun

Q. A lot of people don’t know all the behind-the-scenes stuff a captain works on. Can you tell us what you are currently working on?
A. Vice captains, and preparing for this trip to Colorado Golf Club where I will meet up with the LET and we will look at team room, hotels, restaurants, transportation, the golf course, practice facility, gym etc.

Q. What has been your easiest duty so far?
A. Ordering golf course guide books in meters. Meg Mallon did that for me!

Q. What has been your hardest duty so far?
A. Picking my vice captains.

Q. After the Solheim Cup media day what’s the next big task awaiting you?
A. Heading over to Europe and the RICOH Women’s British Open. There I will meet with former captains and the LET staff. I will also meet a lot of the players from the European Tour that I have not met yet.

Q. I know it is early but have you started putting any thought into your captain’s picks?
A. It’s a bit early for that, so no, I have not.

Q. How often do you track potential player’s results?
A. I do follow both the LPGA and the LET every week and the Rolex Ranking but I do not track any specific player and I’m not looking at any stats yet.

Q. How will your experience as a player help you as a captain?
A. I hope it will help me in supporting the players and give them their best chance to focus on their game and their matches.
