Annika’s memories from the China Suzhou Taihu Open

With the fifth edition of the China Suzhou Taihu Open taking place at Suzhou International Golf Club in Suzhou, China, from October 26-28, we asked the inaugural champion Annika Sorenstam to reflect on her victory of 2008.

This year, prize money has been increased to €350,000 which reflects the standard and prestige of this championship.

It is an exciting time for golf in China with several watershed moments over the past 12 months and the Ladies European Tour is delighted to be working with the China Golf Association, the CLPGA Tour and the Ladies Asian Golf Tour.

Here is a quick recap of the 2008 event: Annika Sorenstam defeated China’s Ye Liying in the second hole of a playoff at the 2008 Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open, giving the Swede her fourth title of the season. Sorenstam, who is retired from golf at the end of the season, shot a 7-under 65 to tie Ye at the end of regulation in the 54-hole Ladies European Tour event. Both finished on 13-under 203. Sorenstam and Ye each birdied the first playoff hole, but Sorenstam claimed the second for the victory.

Read Annika’s reflections on the China Suzhou Taihu Open here:

What are your memories of your victory at the 2008 Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open in China? Very positive. Nice to win on Chinese soil. I was pleased with the way I played that week.

What do you think of the Suzhou Taihu Golf Club? I like it. It has comfortable feel and atmosphere. The golf course had a variety of holes and it was a good challenge.

What do you think about the Suzhou Taihu Golf Club holding five consecutive tournaments? I am glad to see the commitment and effort from the club. The support is very important.

What did you think about the organization of the tournament? It was a well run event. They took good care of the players and the course was in good shape.

Do you have a message for the other players who will play there this year or some advice? I recommend this event. It is a good experience and a chance to build new memories in life.

What other involvement do you have with China these days, if any? I recently hosted the second annual ANNIKA Invitational at Mission Hills and am looking forward to returning next summer. It is the first-ever girls only, junior tournament in China and I am very proud of it. Growing the game of golf for girls is something I am passionate about and I love helping them pursue their dreams.

What do you like most about visiting China? I enjoy experiencing other cultures and meeting new people. The food is very good and it's exciting to be in a country that loves golf.

What did it mean to finish your professional golf career in Taihu, China? This wasn't my last event I played in….it was in Dubai.
