LET Rewind: Lee-Anne Pace wins 2010 China Suzhou Taihu Open
Lee-Anne Pace with Chairman Xu of Suzhou International Golf Resort

With the fifth China Suzhou Taihu Open taking place at Suzhou International Golf Club from 26-28 October, re-live the highlights of the 2010 tournament won by South African Lee-Anne Pace.

Four players compete for the championship… Lee-Anne Pace wins second straight title in two weeks

On the 31st October 2010, the final round of the tournament was under way at Suzhou Taihu International Golf Club. There were four players tied on a score of minus five and competing in a play-off, which was the second at Suzhou Taihu International Golf Club since the inaugural tournament in 2008.

In the last round, three players shot a fantastic 68, four under par for the day, including Lee-Anne Pace, who had just won the previous Sunday in Sanya, Julieta Granada from Paraguay and Hannah Jun of the United States while Christel Boeljon from the Netherlands shot 73.

The play-off was held on the 18th hole, a relatively short par five at 451-yards with two water hazards running through the fairway.

At the first extra hole, Lee-Anne hit the green in rwo while all of the other players layed up and hit the green in three shots.

Christel Boeljon hit the flagpole, which gave her a great opportunity to make a birdie, but unfortunately she missed the putt. Julieta Granada was the first to miss her par putt, which meant only three players progressed to the second hole of the play-off.

On the second extra hole, Lee-Anne again played aggressively and hit the green with her second shot. The other two players were unable to match her two-putt birdie and she won the tournament. This was her second consecutive tournament victory, after she won the previous week in Sanya, China and her fifth victory of the 2010 season. After the first round Lee-Anne had been six shots behind the leader.

At the time, Lee-Anne commented: “I did have some opportunities to win last year. In this year, the first victory was the hardest, but after that, it becomes easier, I have learnt how to deal with nerves and I have learnt how to win.”

At the end of her unforgettable year, Lee-Anne won the 2010 Henderson Money List, becoming the first ever South African in LET history to do so. She was also voted as the Players’ Player of the Year receiving an overwhelming majority with 92 per cent of the vote.
