Interview with Cathryn Bristow from New Zealand

Tell us something about yourself.

I’m left handed which not many people know. There aren’t many left handed golfers out there so it’s fun to try and represent them.

How did you get into golf?

Just through my brother. He played and I just went along with him. It’s pretty much how I got into every sport that I played. My brothers did it first and then I got involved. I was 13 when I started golf.

Any great influences on your career?

Probably my older brother, Phillip.

What’s your lowest round so far?

64: once in college and once in a Pro Am event at the beginning of 2012 in Australia.

What’s in your bag?

TaylorMade, everything through the bag.

What have you been doing since you turned professional?

I turned pro in 2010 and I’ve been playing in the Australian events for three years. I’ve been playing in the US on the Symetra Tour the last few years. I had some LPGA status in 2010 so I played four events on the LPGA in 2010.

You’ve been based in America the last three years?

Yes, plus college for four years before that so seven years in the US. I was in the University of Oregon and now I live in Houston, Texas.

What’s your home golf course?

My home club in New Zealand is Huapai Golf Club in Auckland (west) where I grew up. I practice out of Redstone in Humble, which is in Houston.

Is this your first trip to the Ladies European Tour School?

Yes. Talking to other girls that I know that play on the tour, they love it. They love all the places they go and I like to travel and I’ve never been to Europe for anything, ever. I don’t think Morocco really counts, so I haven’t been to Europe yet, so I would love to see different parts of Europe.

What do you like doing other than golf?

I love all sports. I’m a huge rugby fan. I try and follow the All Blacks as much as possible. I like cooking and reading and trying different types of food, not that I can cook it! I’ve done sky diving and I’ve got two older brothers so I copied them. I played a lot of cricket growing up, tennis, soccer.

What are your goals for 2013?

Retain the tour card. I’ve had one win professionally in the US on the Symetra Tour in 2011, the Pennsylvania Classic. It was rain shortened: 36 holes. So to get another win would be nice. I actually had another one where I had the 64 in the Pro Am and one win a year at least would be nice. That’s the next thing: another win in Europe.
