COLORADO “The Centennial State” - Part I
 Print

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Colorado is packed full of things to do year-round. From family attractions, national parks and outdoor adventure to cosmopolitan cities and welcoming towns, here’s Part 1 of the background information and a taste of what you can expect away from the golf course at The 2013 Solheim Cup!

The state was named after the Colorado River, which early Spanish explorers named the Río Colorado for the red coloured (Spanish:colorado) silt the river carried from the mountains. First-time visitors to Colorado are often surprised to find out that half the state is flat, as many know if for the Rocky mountains and ski slopes. The state is home to 54 14,000 ft mountain peaks, more than any other state in the US. In fact, Denver’s nick name is The Mile-High City, because its official elevation is exactly one mile or 5,280 feet (1,609.344 m) above sea level, making it one of the highest major cities in the United States. A golf ball flies on average ten percent farther here than other states because of the altitude. It flies even farther at higher altitudes (above 7,000 feet).

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado

If you like to get out and about then this is the state for you. The stunning national parks afford visitors every outdoor activity imaginable – from hiking, biking, rafting and fishing to horse-back riding, sailing, rock-climbing and real-life rodeos. The World’s First Rodeo was held on July 4th, 1869 in Deer Trail, Colorado so this is definitely Wild-West territory and the place to come to live the cowboy lifestyle! Top parks to visit include Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Park which is home to the highest mountains of sand in North America and where sand-sledging rules supreme. and Mesa Verde National Park – the nation's richest archaeological preserve with 4,700 archaeological sites built by the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited Mesa Verde for more than 700 years (550 A.D. to 1300 A.D.)

After all that activity you deserve some relaxation, Colorado’s hot springs give you a chance to submerge yourself in naturally heated hot springs year-round, the variety of hot springs all offer relaxation, soothe muscles and will have you marveling at how an unglamorous occurrence like geothermal activity can result in such a luxurious experience. Nearly every hot springs facility in Colorado features lodging, spa facilities and family attractions.

Colordo folk are avid fans of Professional Sports and Denver is home to no less than seven professional sports teams that thrill sold out crowds throughout the year. Basketball, baseball, football, soccer, lacrosse, hockey, rugby including Colorado Rockies, Colorado Rapids, Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets so once the action has finished up on the golf course make sure to book a ticket to one of these games, or perhaps in advance of The Solheim Cup to warm up your vocal chords for 1st tee cheering! #TEAMEUROPE

About The Solheim Cup www.solheimcup.com

The Solheim Cup combines the tradition and prestige of the game of golf with passion for one’s country. This biennial, trans-Atlantic team match-play competition features the best U.S.-born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour and the best European members from the Ladies European Tour (LET).

The Solheim Cup is named in honor of Karsten Solheim, the founder of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, which makes PING golf equipment. In 1990, the Solheim family, in conjunction with the LPGA and the LET, developed the concept and became the title sponsor for The Solheim Cup, professional golf’s international match-play competition for women. Held every two years, the event has grown into the most prestigious international women’s professional golf team event. The Solheim Cup is the most highly coveted trophy in women’s professional golf team competition; some of the most memorable moments in the sport have happened during one of The Solheim Cups, and berths on the U.S. and European teams are highly sought after by players from both organizations.

The 2013 Solheim Cup will take place Aug. 13-18 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. The European Team enters the competition holding the Cup and will need 14 points to retain it, with the U.S. Team needing 14½ points to regain the coveted Waterford Crystal prize. The U.S. team holds an 8-4 lead in the matches, which began in 1990.

In addition to founding sponsor PING, Rolex is also a Global Partner of The Solheim Cup. For more information about The Solheim Cup and updated standings for each team, log on to www.solheimcupeurope.com, www.ladieseuropeantour.com.
