European Solheim Cup Team points update
Carlota Ciganda
Caroline Masson
Pernilla Lindberg
Giulia Sergas

The Race to Colorado is heating up for the potential members of The 2013 European Solheim Cup team.

The 12-woman team will be comprised of the top 4 players on the LET Solheim Cup points ranking, the top 4 LET members appearing on the Rolex Women’s World Rankings and a further 4 LET members selected by the Captain, Liselotte Neumann to be announced on 4th August, at the end of the qualifying period.

With 40 Solheim Cup points available to the winner of the World Ladies Championship this week, there are several players who are capable of moving into the top four on the LET points list.

At present, Carlota Ciganda of Spain, Caroline Masson of Germany, Pernilla Lindberg of Sweden and Giulia Sergas of Italy occupy the top four places from the points list.

The next four places from the Rolex World Rankings are occupied by Suzann Pettersen of Norway, Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, Azahara Munoz of Spain and Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist.

However, any European LET player with 26.38 points or more could move up into the top four places with a victory at Mission Hills Haikou in China.

Those in the frame to enter the top four include Diana Luna, Carly Booth, Suzann Pettersen, Trish Johnson, Felicity Johnson, Gwladys Nocera, Melissa Reid, Anne-Lise Caudal, Laura Davies and Mikaela Parmlid.

A second place finish is worth 24 points, so, with Sergas absent, Luna, Booth, Pettersen, T. Johnson, F. Johnson and Nocera could all move into the top four by finishing runner-up.

Points are awarded for top 10 positions in events with prize funds of less than 750,000 Euros with the following breakdown:  1st: 40 points; 2nd: 24 points; 3rd: 18 points; 4th: 16 points; 5th: 14 points; 6th: 12 points; 7th: 10 points; 8th: 8 points; 9th: 6 points; 10th: 4 points.

However, more points are awarded at major championships and they are extended to top 20 finishes.

With just 10 LET tournaments to be played before the teams are announced at the Ricoh Women’s British Open at St Andrews, Scotland, on 4th August, the anticipation is building in the Race to Colorado. The 13th edition of The Solheim Cup being played from August 13-18 at Colorado Golf Club, Co., USA and the European team is targeting its first win on American soil.

About The Solheim Cup

The Solheim Cup combines the tradition and prestige of the game of golf with passion for one’s country. This biennial, trans-Atlantic team match-play competition features the best U.S.-born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour and the best European members from the Ladies European Tour (LET).

The Solheim Cup is named in honor of Karsten Solheim, the founder of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, which makes PING golf equipment. In 1990, the Solheim family, in conjunction with the LPGA and the LET, developed the concept and became the title sponsor for The Solheim Cup, professional golf’s international match-play competition for women. Held every two years, the event has grown into the most prestigious international women’s professional golf team event. The Solheim Cup is the most highly coveted trophy in women’s professional golf team competition; some of the most memorable moments in the sport have happened during one of The Solheim Cups, and berths on the U.S. and European teams are highly sought after by players from both organizations.

The 2013 Solheim Cup will take place Aug. 13-18 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. The European Team enters the competition holding the Cup and will need 14 points to retain it, with the U.S. Team needing 14½ points to regain the coveted Waterford Crystal prize. The U.S. team holds an 8-4 lead in the matches, which began in 1990.

In addition to founding sponsor PING, Rolex is also a Global Partner of The Solheim Cup. For more information about The Solheim Cup and updated standings for each team, log on to,
