When the Men’s Tour met the Ladies Tour - Marta Silva and her new coach Alex Larrazabal “Larry”
 Print

The Lalla Meryem Cup was the perfect opportunity to write a story about European Tour and Ladies European Tour, and we found an interesting relationship between one of our players, Marta Silva, and former caddy of Jose Maria Olazabal and Ryder Cup 2012 Assistant Captain, Alex Larrazabal.

The Lalla Meryem Cup was the perfect opportunity to write stories about the men’s European Tour and Ladies European Tour and we found an interesting relationship between one of our players, Marta Silva and Alex Larrazabal, the former caddie of the victorious 2012 European Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal and his Assistant Captain.

Marta Silva, from Galicia, is one of the Spanish Rookies on the LET in 2013 with a successful amateur career. Marta turned professional last October after graduating in the US and finished tied for 43rd place at Lalla Aicha Tour School Final Qualifying 2013. She now has a 9b exemption category. We interviewed her last week and talked about her new coach and caddie for this event, Alex Larrazabal.

Alex is quite a multifaceted person. He won the British Amateur Championship and has also been a professional golfer, manager and caddie. Barcelona’s versatile “Larry” has played every course and in all top amateur events. He even played The Masters in 2003 and then turned pro, but afterwards became a manager. He was Jose Mari Olazabal’s caddie and was an assistant captain in the Ryder Cup from January 2012.

Now, he has a new job, which is to manage and guide professional players and to try to get the best performance out of them. He is now consulting and coaching Marta and their relationship started in January 2013 in Madrid. He mentioned to her that he was coaching some professional players and offered to come to Barcelona and try to practice with him to see if she liked it and “I went to Barcelona, played in El Prat and I loved it!” Marta said.

“We get on very well and understand each other perfectly; I feel very comfortable with him,” Marta said.

We asked what Larry learnt by being so close to Jose Maria Olazabal: “Well, apart from that, he has been also a great player… He has transmitted me all his experience,” Marta said. “Anytime we are doing something, he always has an anecdote to tell, that I can learn from. He knows a lot about golf, he has seen many golfers, many good quality golfers and that’s something that I can notice.”

“I am not too technical a player; I am a player who likes to feel the swing and what I like to hear from him is more about sensations and the feeling regarding the swing.”

When asked how she feels about having the same caddie as Olazabal, Marta said: “For me it’s an honour to have the same caddy as Olazabal this week (in Morocco).”

Marta now plans to play in as many LET events as possible as well as LETAS events and she added: “I will be playing the Ocho Ladies Open – Galicia next May for sure.”

Alex Larrazabal was switching between the Lalla Meryem Cup and the Trophee Hassan II to follow the performance of all his other pupils. He already has a portfolio of interesting players, including his brother Pablo (on the European Tour), Alvaro Velasco, Pedro Oriol and Juan Antonio Bragulat.

Although his week in Morocco was probably one of his most exhausting, running from one event to the other, it was not as busy as his week at the Ryder Cup last year!

We would like to thank Marta and Larry for sharing their experiences with us and wish them the best of luck on this new project.
