Hull and Neumann play together in Pro-Am

European Solheim Cup Captain Liselotte Neumann kept a close eye on team hopeful Charley Hull as they played together in the RICOH Women’s British Open Pro-Am on the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Hull, 17, could be named as the youngest ever Solheim Cup competitor if she is selected as one of four wild card picks by Neumann when she names her European team two hours after the conclusion of play on Sunday evening.

As it stands, Paula Creamer was the youngest Solheim Cup competitor when she played in the 2005 Solheim Cup aged 19 years and one month, four days. Suzann Pettersen was the youngest European player aged 21 years, five months, 13 days.

Hull and Neumann played in a four ball with John Clark, Managing Director of PING Europe and Naga Munchetty, who was filming a piece for Sunday’s BBC Breakfast News.

Hull, who started her rookie season this year with five straight runner-up finishes, wasn’t fazed by the attention.

She said: “It’s fantastic. It’s the Ricoh Women’s British Open and it’s at St. Andrews so it doesn’t get any bigger than that!”

Hull is in fine form having tied for ninth place at the ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters at Buckinghamshire Golf Club on Sunday. “Last week at the Ladies European Masters, it was great playing with Karrie Webb and Laura Davies. I’ve been looking up to them since I was young and I went out and eagled the first hole so that is a great memory,” she said.

When asked how she stays grounded, she added: “I speak to my friends every day and speak to my sisters. I just switch off after the golf.”

Although Hull is targeting her first professional victory at the Ricoh Women’s British Open, a major championship, she said:  “It’s something that I just want to let happen. I’ve got the experience and I’ll just get more experience every time I play. Last week I finished ninth, so I’ll just keep building some good scores together and hopefully it will come together at the right time.”
