Kelsey MacDonald looking to shine at Archerfield Links

Kelsey MacDonald has received one of five sponsor’s invitations for the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open and will be looking to make the most of her opportunity to shine on home turf.

The 22-year-old turned professional in late April after tying for 57th in the Lalla Meryem Cup, Morocco, where she played as an amateur.

She made her professional debut on the LET in the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open, with an impressive tie for 31st at National Golf Club. She is also ranked 36th on the Access Series Order of Merit after four starts.

“Getting to play as an amateur the last two years it’s great to get an invite this year and I’m really looking forward to it,” said the Nairn golfer, who was crowned Scottish women’s and Under-12 stroke play champion in 2010.

A member of the GB&I teams that lifted the Astor Trophy and Vagliano Trophy in 2011, MacDonald has recorded three top ten finishes on the Access Series this season.

She said:  “I missed one cut which was very disappointing but I’ve taken a lot from the events, which are very well organised. I’m finding my feet this year so I’m excited to be involved. Turkey was my first LET event.”

MacDonald explained how she turned pro after receiving the invitation to the LET event in Turkey.

“I wanted to finish my studies at Stirling and I felt the time was right. I had been working a lot with Robert Rock and got quite a lot of confidence through that. Having played in Morocco as an amateur and making the cut; that was another boost.”

Speaking to the media on Thursday, she explained how she hopes to follow in the footsteps of fellow Stirling University Graduate, Catriona Matthew, who recently starred at The Solheim Cup.

“Having been at Stirling I always see myself trying to do what Catriona’s done and I think it’s the same for everyone. It’s when the girls are playing tournaments or away travelling to America you’re reminded you’re there representing the university and how well Catriona has done and still is doing,” she said.
