Vietnamís Tang hopes to be in seventh heaven
 Print

Seven years on the Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT), Vietnam's sole "ambassador" TANG, THI NHUNG has yet to land a prized catch. Interestingly, Tang, who hails from Ho Chi Minh city, has not played golf in Vietnam. She only took up playing the sport in Bangkok 12 years ago when her husband David Lloyd, was posted there for work.

"There was a driving range near the apartment where we lived and while my husband is out at work I go to the driving range armed only with a 7-iron and worked up to my present status," said Tang after the practice round at Yalong Bay Golf Club - the venue for the fourth edition of the Euro300,000 Sanya Ladies Open 2013, starting tomorrow.

Having won only two titles - one each in 2008 and 2009 in the Cactus Tour in the US - Tang has only established herself as a "good starter, bad ender" and this was what that hindered her from winning more titles.

"Yes, I always tend to do well in the opening round and slowly falter in the subsequent rounds. It is my biggest weakness. I need more mental strength, course management and confidence to strengthen my game. I also want to enjoy but I'm too serious and these factors do affect my game," said the 34-year-old who still resides in Bangkok.

For this week, Tang is going to change her approach. "I hope to be more consistent, going to relax my seriousness and just go out to enjoy playing the game. And with confidence running high I may be able even surprise myself," she said.

The 54-hole Sanya Ladies Open features a field of 120 players from Asia, Europe and the USA.

The tri-sanctioned tournament (LAGT; LET and CGA) sees Asian players in action against LET challengers, led by defending champion Cassandra Kirkland of France, South Africa's Lee-Anne Pace and England’s Laura Davies, while China's challenge will be led by LET rookie Xi Yu Lin and seasoned campaigners Zhang Na and Yan Panpan.

Trust the Koreans, as one among them could walk away as the winner, while the Thai girls led by Nontaya Srisawang could pose danger to the rest of the field.
