Second Round leader quotes from the Sanya Ladies Open

Ye Na Chung 64 68 = 132 (-12)

Are you happy with the way you’ve played so far?

I’m very happy to be in this position. I am satisfied with my performance but I don’t target becoming the champion now because I just want to focus on my game.

Do you feel ready to become the champion?

I don’t want to think about becoming champion. Tomorrow I will try my best.

It had died down a little bit in the afternoon, but did you have difficulty with the wind?

When I came to the course this morning I was a little nervous because it was so windy, but when I teed off, the weather had calmed down and was not that windy so after a few holes I felt better and relaxed.

How many countries have you visited?

Seven or eight.

When is your birthday?

21st October, last week. If I win, it will be a great present!

What are your hobbies?

Watching TV, because Korean drama is really fantastic! I like meeting my friends and I like speaking a lot. I am very talkative.

What about shopping?

My job is walking so I don’t like walking.

Which other Korean players do you know?

Jiyai Shin is my friend, sometimes I see Na Yeon Choi and Soon Yi Kim. Inbee Park is the same age but I don’t know her.

Did you go to the university?

I didn’t go, because I don’t think I’m ready yet. In one or two years I will go to qualifying school.

Lee-Anne Pace 67 66 = 133 (-11)

A strong comeback…

I finished strong with two birdies coming in. I played well the whole day really and played better than yesterday. I felt better when I woke up this morning. I think everything is just in place now.

Are you expecting to lift the trophy tomorrow?

You can never expect anything in golf but I’m certainly hoping so and I think I’m playing well enough to do so.

Could it have been much better?

There were a couple of easy shots that I didn’t get close enough and some of the tougher holes I did birdie so I guess it balances out in the end.

Did the wind affect you?

I quite like it when the wind blows. The course is set up quite short and it’s still very scoreable. It’s dried out a little bit and you’ve got some shorter shots into the greens.

There is a 15-year-old one shot behind you.

That is amazing. It’s amazing for her to play well at this tournament. In your home country it’s always great.

Yu Ting Shi 67 67 = 134 (-10)

Very well done. The wind didn’t affect you out there?

This afternoon was a little bit better.

Why were you striking the ball so well?

These two days my putting is good and the driver is longer than before so it seems easier to play.

Do you have any nerves playing as an amateur with these professionals?

No, because I have played with the professionals lots of times before.

Linda Wessberg 67 68 = 135 (-9)

Linda, a lot of players struggled in the wind. How did you cope with the conditions out there?

It was quite tough actually. It was pretty gusty in the beginning but I tried to hit the fairways and the greens and make as many putts as possible.

I was three under after nine. I didn’t hit as many greens today as I did yesterday but it was pretty steady and I had a good short game today so I was lucky.

There have been some low rounds this week. To what do you attribute that?

Yesterday was a perfect day to shoot a low score. Today is a bit more tricky and if you’re in the rough it’s easy to get flyers and the ball can even be embedded. You have to be a little bit lucky and hit good shots.

What are the toughest aspects of this course?

I would say the rough. I guess it’s Bermuda, so I’m not used to it, but I think the rough is the trickiest.

What’s the plan of attack for tomorrow?

It’s been working pretty good today and yesterday but I was trying to hit as many fairways and greens as possible and hole the putts.

Why do you think you’re such a good player in the wind?

I don’t know! I might be used to it. I was brought up on an island playing golf, just outside Gothenburg, an hour north. Ourst. We had a summer house there so that’s where I started to play golf and it could be quite windy there. I’ve been working really hard on the ball striking and if you don’t put as much screw on the ball, either draw it or fade it, it kind of tends to stay pretty straight. Good ball contact and play with the wind. Sometimes you hit a fade into it or a draw with it.

Does this course suit your play?

I guess so. It’s a good golf course and in really good condition. The greens are rolling really nicely and the toughest part is if you end up in the rough. It’s so easy to get flyers because it’s kind of dry. I got a flyer on eight, my second last hole. You stand there and look at it and you can’t do anything.

Is this a course where you need to think?

Yes and no. Yesterday it was quite straightforward and the greens are pretty soft so you can pretty much hit it at the pin. Today it was quite tough in the morning but it’s calmed down a little bit.

It was really gusty and you stand over the ball and all of a sudden the wind has gone and then it picks up again.

How many clubs extra did you take into a head wind?

It was three at one stage. I started on 10 so 11 was my second hole and I hit 7-iron where wedge is the number normally for me. It was straight into. It depends if you hit it up in the air or a little lower. I think down wind is harder because sometimes it pushes the ball down.

Was it mostly a tail wind or head wind?

Mostly cross winds! They moved up a couple of tees for us today which was nice, I guess.

What do you think of the pin positions?

I think it’s good. I like it when it’s close to the edges. Sometimes I feel we play it a bit too much in the centre of the greens so this makes you play good shots if you’re going to hit it close.

Did the ball move on the greens?

It was oscillating a little bit this morning but it got better.

Five birdies, one bogey. Did you hit it close?

I had a couple of tap ins and I made the one on the last hole, 12 foot and a longer one on 18, which was my last hole. It was around 10 metres, downhill. I gave myself a lot of chances both today and yesterday, which I didn’t hole, so it evens out.
