Interview with Rachel Goodall from England
 Print

We met 23-year-old Rachel Goodall during the Lalla Aicha Tour School Pre Qualifier, group A, in Rabat, after she had just turned professional that week. Rachel was born in Birkenhead, England and started to play golf at Moreton Hills Driving Range. As an amateur, Rachel was a member of the European Nations Cup Team for England in 2012 and she represented her country at the Home Internationals.

Q: How did you start playing golf?

I used to go to watch my dad play, but I was too young. That was when I was four years old and first time to hit a golf ball. I loved it. Since then, I have been playing golf. My mum has never played, just my dad.  I have a younger brother and used to play, but not anymore.

Q: What happened next…? When did you start to compete?

I started with the English training squads when I was about twelve years old and then I progressed from there. I never played Curtis Cup but played for England at the Home Internationals.

Q: Tell me about your studies…

I have done my A levels and then started to practice full time golf, because that is what I wanted to do.

Q: Your preparation for this tournament: how many tournaments have you played in before coming here?

I haven´t played since the end of September and I got an invitation to play in the WPGA International Challenge and did alright. I have not played much this year, the weather is awful in England.

Q: What do you think your chances to get in the Ladies European Tour are?

I would say, I have been playing quite steady this week. If I play like the last couple of days, I think I might be able to continue to the next step.

Q: What do you think is the best part of your game?

My driving, I am quite accurate, around 250-260 yards.

Q: Is there any yardage that you think you do pretty well?

Yes, anything from 90 yards in, that is what I practice all the time.

Q: Your weakest part of the game?

My putting, in general, and the pace control. That is where I work harder to make me a better player and hole more putts.

Q: How does this course, Royal Dar Es Salam, fit your game?

I really like it. You have to be quite straight and hit a lot of greens. You can read the greens, I like fast greens. So it fits me quite nicely.

Q: Your lowest round…

-7 at Troon Golf Course, last year

Q: Any holes in one?

Yes, I had two. Last one in Troon, last year …

Q: Your favourite golf course?

I really like Kingbarns, in Scotland

Q: Do you know any players already on tour?

I played a lot of golf with Charley Hull, and Holly Clyburn. We grew playing golf together.

Q: Have you any superstitions when you play golf?

I can´t use number 4 golf balls and if I play well, I have the same meal every day. Today I had a chicken sandwich and this is probably what I am going to have the following days.

Q: Your plans and goals for this and next year?

My goal would be to get my card and then keep my card and learn how to play on the tour. It would be nice to play like Charley!

Q: Your plans for Christmas?

I will probably take a week off at Christmas. I like Christmas; it is probably my favourite time of the year. I normally have my family around in Liverpool and do normal Christmas; cooking, eating and presents.
