Interview with ´Leftie´ Cathryn Bristow from New Zealand

Cathryn Bristow, who was born in Auckland, New Zealand, is one of the few “lefties” on the Ladies European Tour. Cathryn turned professional in 2010 and played her first season on the Ladies European Tour in 2013, appearing in a total of 11 events. Her best result so far has been at the South African Women's Open, where finished tied for 9th.

Cathryn finished 139th on the ISPS HANDA Order of Merit and therefore decided to return to the Lalla Aicha Tour School.

We interviewed Cathryn, 33, at the Lalla Aicha Tour School in Rabat, where finished fourth and went forward to Final Qualifier.

Q: How did you start to play golf?

I started playing golf when I was 13 because my older brother played. I have two brothers and they are both quite sporty. This was in New Zealand and I grew up basically following them around and playing all sports: soccer, tennis, cricket, whatever and then I started playing golf. It was in same golf course as I play now. I think I grew into golf… it was not my favourite sport when I first started but then it became my main sport.

Q: When was the first time you started to play national and international competitions ?

I did not play national events until 2008 and 2009, when I competed for New Zealand at the World Amateur Team Championships and the Queen Sirikit Cup. I went to the US for four years.

Q: Your studies: did you go to the University in the US?

Yes, I went to the University of Oregon when I was 20-24 years old and  graduated in Psychology. Afterwards, I stayed there and played mainly in the Symetra Tour and few LPGA events in 2010 and 2011.

Q: How was your first season on the Ladies European Tour and how did you prepare to come here?

I did not play well enough this season and it was because a little bit of everything. I have been working on a lot of things, putting, chipping…

Q: Tell us about your game, what is the best part of your game?

My short game is one of the best parts.

Q: What about your putting average and driving distance?

My driving distance is around 230 meters and the average is 30 putts.

Q: Your lowest round ever?

-9, two or three years ago in Australia on one of the ALPG events.

Q: Any holes in one?

Yes, I have made three in total and last one was last year, during a charity event.
