Lydia Hall Giving Back through Swing 4 Success

More than 417 youngsters from 12 schools in the Bridgend area have had the opportunity to benefit from ‘Swing 4 Success’ over the past three months, an innovative programme created and organised by Ladies European Tour golfer Lydia Hall.

Working with the Active Young People Department of Bridgend Borough Council to coincide with leaving a legacy for the Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex, taking place at Royal Porthcawl on 24-27 July, Hall devised classroom and practical lessons in line with school curriculum requirements.

Students had the opportunity to participate in a one hour theory lesson in the classroom along with a one hour practical session using Tri-Golf equipment.

The classroom lessons included Maths, English and design elements, as students were asked to complete golf score cards and calculate the mode, median and mean scores. They were also asked to design a golf hole with a theme and complete an essay on their project.

“The programme gave the juniors the opportunity to try something that they would never have had the opportunity to do without me going into schools,” said Lydia, the 2012 ISPS HANDA Ladies British Masters champion.

“Golf has become more accessible but it’s still not that accessible to children so I have been able to give them the opportunity to start something positive. Through New2Golf, run by Golf Development Wales, the children will also have the opportunity to continue and progress through free lessons at their local golf clubs.

“For me it would be an amazing feeling to see one of those children from the schools I’ve visited playing on the Ladies European Tour or men’s European or PGA Tour in 10-15 years. I am pursuing my dream and for me that is the ultimate dream: to see someone pursuing their dreams as well.”

Hall will be making her first appearance of the 2014 Ladies European Tour season at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open, taking place at National Golf Club from Thursday, featuring live television coverage over all four rounds.
