England’s Melissa Reid earned the first of her four Ladies European Tour titles at the 2010 Turkish Airlines Ladies Open at National Golf Club. We caught up with her at the venue four years on.
Melissa: you won the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open at National Golf Club in 2010. How does it feel to be back?
It’s nice. They’ve made a few changes to the course, which is good. The course is in great condition so it’s going to be a great test this week.
Does it bring back fond memories?
It does. It’s a really tricky golf course so I don’t really know how I won around here but it’s one of those courses where you really do need to hit it straight off the tee. I’ve always hit it quite well off the tee so that’s probably why it favours me a little bit. I have great memories here and I’m made to feel very welcome so it’s always nice coming back.
How have you prepared for the tournament?
I’ve just changed coach to Kevin Craggs and we’ve been working together for about six weeks which has been really good for me. He’s guided me and it’s been good. I’m not expecting too much but I feel like I’m swinging it a lot better and it will be nice to put it into play.
He’s up in Scotland and fortunately my best friend Breanne lives 30 minutes away from him so it works out quite well and I see him at least once a week. At the moment I’m driving up but if I fly into Heathrow then I’ll fly straight up to Scotland to see him. He’s only four hours from my house so it’s working a lot better. He’s been amazing. He also works with Catriona Matthew and Kylie Walker.
What else have you been working on?
I’ve been working quite hard on my fitness with my trainer John Woods. I’m seeing him twice a week at St George’s Park. I’ve been seeing a lot of my family and friends.
When did you play your last tournament?
New Zealand and the Aussie tournaments in February. I’ve had a bit of time off. It was nice because my sister got married and it was nice to be at home and do a bit of work.
What’s your mentality coming into this week?
I’ve been working really hard and I feel fresh. We have a nice hotel this week so it’s a lot easier to relax. It will be good to put the hard work into practice.
