Interview with the 2013 ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters champion Karrie Webb
 Print

Karrie Webb claimed her third victory of the 2013 season when she came from three strokes behind a trio of players going into the final round to win the ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters by one stroke. On 3-6 July, the Hall of Famer, with 53 professional victories to her credit, will return to defend the title at the home of the Ladies European Tour, Buckinghamshire Golf Club, near London. Here, the Australian describes her memories from the 2013 championship and her hopes for the 2014 event.

Karrie: you came firing out of the blocks this year. How do you assess your start to the 2014 season?

It's definitely been a nice start to the year. Having won twice already this year already makes it a good year but I'm hoping that I can turn a good start into a great year!

How did you find the Buckinghamshire golf course last year?

I really enjoyed the Buckinghamshire golf course last year. I thought it was in good shape and had a good mix of challenging shots but also allowed for some birdies.

What did you find most challenging about the golf course?

I really like the challenge off the tee at Buckinghamshire. I think with the course being as dry as it was you really had to shape the ball both ways off the tee to keep it in the fairway and give yourself a good shot at the green.

Which hole stood out for you and why?

I liked the reachable par four 17th. I thought it was a great risk/reward hole that really could change the momentum of the tournament with only a par 3 to go to finish.

What are your memories of the tournament?

Well for me, the whole last round was positive. It was quite windy on Sunday last year which made it the hardest day of the three. I managed to make quite a few birdies as well as two eagles in my round and then hold on over the last three holes to win. It was really one of the better rounds of golf I played last year under the circumstances.

How much are you looking forward to defending your title?

I'm really looking forward to defending back at Buckinghamshire this year. It's a little more golf to play this year, being four rounds instead of three, which I think is a good thing going forward for a tournament that's quickly becoming one of the more prestigious ones to win on the LET.

How do you feel about your game heading to the ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters?

Well it's a little way off yet but I'm hoping I'm still carrying the sort of form I've started the year and if not I hope it kicks starts another run if good play.

What would it mean to win this event again?

I've always enjoyed playing all over the world. I think winning all over the world really is something to strive for as it shows that you're able to adjust to different courses and conditions. So it would mean a lot and be great for my confidence as it was last year.
