Biography Gustafson, Sophie (SWE)

PROFESSIONAL

  • In 2013, Sophie played in nine tournaments and her best finish was a tie for 16th at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. She ended the season ranked 117th on the ISPS Handa Order of Merit. Although she did not play in the Solheim Cup team this edition, she was one of the key helpers and assisted the captains and the team for the victory.
  • In 2012, played in 6 LET tournaments and posted T7th at the UniCredit Ladies German Open presented by Audi.  She ended the season ranked 88th on the ISPS Handa Order of Merit and 45th on the Solheim Cup point list.
  • In 2011, won the European Nations Cup team event with Anna Norqvist at La Sella Resort in Denia, Spain.  Member of Europe’s victorious Solheim Cup team at Killeen Castle in Ireland and earned four points out of a possible four to be the team’s leading points scorer, taking her all-time Cup record to 13-12-6, with 16 points scored. Played in seven LET events as an individual and finished 3rd at the Ricoh Women's British Open and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. Ranked 6th on the Money List. Best finishes on the LPGA were third at the Ricoh Women's British Open and a tie for fifth at the Sybase Match Play Championship.
  • In 2010, won the Comunitat Valenciana European Nations Cup, a team event, representing Sweden alongside Anna Nordqvist at La Sella Resort in Alicante, Spain. Won the AIB Ladies Irish Open at Killeen Castle, her fourth Irish Open following victories in 1998 at Ballyliffin, 2000 at Faithlegg and 2003 at Killarney. It was her sixth title on Irish soil as she also won the 2003 BT Open in Northern Ireland and the TSN World Cup partnering Carin Koch in 2000.  Finished 15th on the Henderson Money List with season’s earnings of €111,841.00 from six LET tournaments played.
  • In 2009, won the Ladies European Tour’s Henderson Money List, thereby finishing as the official European number one for the fourth time in her career with earnings of €281,315.00 from 4 events played. Won the 2009 CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge - her fifth LPGA Tour victory. Qualified for her seventh European Solheim Cup Team based on her top-5 ranking on the LET points list and recorded a 1-3-0 record for the team. Finished runner-up at the Evian Masters Presented by Societe Generale, where she lost to Ai Miyazato in a one-hole, sudden-death playoff; tied for 2nd at the AIB Ladies Irish Open; finished 14th at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and tied for 33rd at the Ricoh Women's British Open.
  • In 2007, won the Final New Star Money List. Won the 2007 De Vere Ladies Scottish Open. Represented Europe in The 2007 Solheim Cup at Halmstad in Sweden. Won the Siemens Austrian Ladies Open and as a consequence earned Life Membership of the LET.
  • In 2005, represented Europe at The Solheim Cup and won 2 points. Represented Sweden with Carin Koch in the 2005 Women’s World Cup of Golf and finished T16.
  • In 2003, won three times and secured the LET Order of Merit title. Won LET Stroke average trophy for the second straight year. Won Player’s Player of the year award for the third time. Also won on the LPGA at the Samsung World Championship. Represented Europe in The Solheim Cup and won three points.
  • In 2002, won the Biarritz Ladies Classic, defeating her roommate for the week Mhairi McKay at the first extra hole. Earned two points at The 2002 Solheim Cup. Won LET Stroke average trophy for the second year running in 2002. Ranked number two in eagles on the LPGA (13).
  • In 2001, won the AAMI Australian Open when she beat the then World number one Karrie Webb into second place. Won again on the LPGA at the Subaru Memorial of Naples, firing a career best 64 on the way. Posted her first hole-in-one during the second round of the Evian Masters and recorded her second hole-in-one during the Tyco/ADT Championship on the LPGA.
  • In 2000, won three times in Europe and once in USA as she established herself as one of Europe’s leading players. Finished top of the Evian Order of Merit and Evian Money list. Also partnered Carin Koch to victory in the inaugural TSN Ladies World Cup Golf at Adare Manor. Won 2 and a half out of a possible four points in Europe’s Solheim Cup victory at Loch Lomond. Voted 2000 LET Players’ Player of the Year. Voted Swedish Golfer of the Year 2000 by the Association of Golf Writers in Sweden.
  • In 1998, voted Waterford Players’ Player of the Year after winning twice and finishing second on the Order of Merit.
  • In 1996, completed maiden American Express Tour victory at the Deesse Ladies Swiss Open.

PERSONAL

177cm with a penchant for colouring her (naturally brown) hair to suit her mood! Green eyes. Hobbies include motorbikes and music. Purchased a “Triumph Tiger” motorbike in 2004. Credits Seve Ballesteros and Solheim Cup team mate Laura Davies as the individuals most influencing her career. Attended a Swedish school for 15 years, where she studied law, accounting and marketing. In 2011, gave a sit-down interview for The Golf Channel during The Solheim Cup for the first time despite a stuttering problem and then in January 2012, named the recipient of the Golf Writers’ Association of America (GWAA) Ben Hogan Award for remaining active in golf despite a physical handicap or serious illness.
