Biography Masson, Caroline (GER)

PROFESSIONAL

  • In 2013, Caroline played in seven tournaments on the LET with a season-best finish of third at the ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters, where she fired a career low 63 in the first round at Buckinghamshire Golf Club. She also made her Solheim Cup debut and was a member of the first European Team to win in the United States at Colorado Golf Club. She scored 2.5 points from four matches played earning a 2-1-1 win-loss-draw record. Her most successful partnership was formed with Caroline Hedwall and the pair won both of their four-ball matches, against Angela Stanford and Gerina Piller on day one and against Michelle Wie and Jessica Korda on day two. Caroline also partnered Catriona Matthew in the day two foursomes to halve the match against Brittany Lincicome and Lizette Salas. This was also Caroline’s rookie season on the US LPGA Tour where she played in 22 events and recorded two top ten finishes including a season-best of 5th at the Safeway Classic. She led the rookie race for much of the season but narrowly lost out to Moriya Jutanugarn. In summary, she achieved nine top 20 results around the world, three of which was top 10s. This was despite having broken her thumb during an event in Japan towards the end of the year.
  • In 2012, her third season on the LET, Caroline established herself as one of the circuit’s top players, finishing 2nd on the ISPS Handa Order of Merit behind Carlota Ciganda with season’s earnings €241,831.15. Caroline earned her breakthrough win at the South African Women’s Open at Selborne Park Golf Club. She posted 6 further top 10 finishes including four 2nd places:  2nd at the Allianz Ladies Slovak Open, T2nd at the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open, 2nd at the Tenerife Open (lost a play-off to Stacey Keating) and 2nd at the China Suzhou Taihu Open. Also finished T3rd at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and T6th at the Deloitte Ladies Open.
  • In 2011, recorded seven top-10 finishes including a career-best tie for 2nd at the Lalla Meryem Cup at Golf du Soleil in Agadir, Morocco. Also tied for 4th at the UniCredit Ladies German Open and tied for 5th at the Ricoh Women's British Open at Carnoustie Links, where she led the tournament after the second and third rounds and was paired with world number one and eventual winner Yani Tseng in the last round. 8th at the Deloitte Dutch Ladies Open and tied for 8th at the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open; tied for 9th at the Raiffeisenbank Prague Masters and tied for 10th at the DeutscheBank Ladies Swiss Open. Was injured late in the season but still managed to finish 7th on the Money List with season’s earnings of 167,187.46 euro from 16 events.
  • In 2010, her rookie year on the LET, Caroline recorded four top-10 finishes, including a career best tie for third at the Open de France Feminin. She finished 6th at the S4C Wales Championship, with a career low 64 (-8) in the final round at Conwy. She tied for 6th at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open and tied for 9th at the Deutsche Bank Swiss Open. She finished 26th on the Henderson Money List with season’s earnings of €81,180.25 from 16 tournaments.

AMATEUR

Masson won the Ladies European Tour’s Final Qualifying School at La Manga Club in Murcia, Spain, in December. Anna Nordqvist won this event the previous year so it’s possibly a sign of great things to come. A member of the German National Team which competed at the 2006 World Amateur Team Championship, Masson enjoyed a successful amateur career, winning the 2008 Spanish Ladies Open Amateur Championship at the Club de Golf la Reserva and seven German national championships. As a junior, she represented Europe on the Junior Solheim Cup Team in 2005 and 2007. She turned professional in December 2009 with a handicap of +4.8.

PERSONAL

Masson is the daughter of Stefan and Gabriele Masson. Her father is a tennis coach in Germany and she has one brother, Alex. She started playing golf aged six and attended Oklahoma State University for a short time. Away from golf she enjoys playing sports, music, movies and seeing friends.
