Biography Matthew, Catriona (SCO)

PROFESSIONAL

  • In 2013, Catriona Matthew played in four tournaments on the LET schedule and 21 events on the LPGA, as well as The 2013 Solheim Cup, where she was a member of the first European team to win in the United States. On the LET, she won her sixth title and her 10th official title overall, with a two stroke win at the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open at Archerfield Links in East Lothian, where she is an honorary member. She held steady in winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour to post a three-round total of eight-under-par after rounds of 71, 67 and 70. She ended two strokes ahead of England’s Hannah Burke, the only other player under par. Her next best finish was T8th at the ISPS HANDA Women’s Australian Open.  On the LPGA, her year was highlighted by five top 10s, including two strong finishes in majors: 2nd at the Wegmans LPGA Championship and T7th at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Catriona made her seventh appearance in The Solheim Cup at Colorado Golf Club and was a member of a winning team for the third time (2003, 2011 and 2013). She posted a 0-2-2 record taking her all-time record to 11-10-8 and she scored one point, taking her total to 16 points scored overall.
  • In 2012, Catriona won the Ladies Irish Open by a single shot over Suzann Pettersen at Killeen Castle. Catriona ended on seven under par to earn her 10th professional win. She played in 4 LET events also posting a tie for 10th at the Ricoh Women’s British Open, ending 11th on the ISPS Handa Order of Merit with season’s earnings of €118,183.21. On the LPGA, Catriona played in 20 events, 18 cuts made, $714,272 (18). She earned 7 top-10 finishes. Recorded season-best runner-up finish at the LPGA KEB*HanaBank Championship, where she lost to Suzann Pettersen in a three-hole, sudden death playoff.
  • In 2011, earned her fourth LET victory at the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open, presented by EventScotland, at Archerfield Links. Tied for 5th in the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Carnoustie; tied for 6th at the Ladies Irish Open and tied for 36th at the Evian Masters. Earned her fourth-career LPGA victory at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational. Other top-10 finishes included: fourth at the ShopRite LPGA Classic; tied for fifth at the Mizuno Classic; eighth at the HSBC Women's Champions; tied for eighth at the Honda LPGA Thailand. Member of the victorious European Solheim Cup Team at Killeen Castle in Ireland and earned a 2-0-2 record in her sixth appearance on the team. Earned an emphatic 6 and 5 victory over Paula Creamer in the opening singles match.
  • In 2010, played in three LET events. Tied for 23rd at the Evian Masters and tied for 40th at the AIB Ladies Irish Open but missed the cut at the Ricoh Women’s British Open.  On the LPGA, best finish was a tie for fifth at the Sybase Match Play Championship; also tied for 6th at the Kia Classic Presented by J Golf; also finished tied for 16th at both the season-opening Honda PTT LPGA Thailand and ShopRite LPGA Classic.
  • In 2009, in August, just 11 weeks after giving birth to her second daughter Sophie Lauren in May, and three weeks before her 40th birthday, Catriona Matthew stunned the world of golf by winning the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, securing her first major championship.  Her sensational three-stroke triumph, which included in the second round a course-record 7-under 30 on the back nine, meant that, 14 years after turning professional, she became the first Scot, and the fourth Brit, to claim a women’s major golf championship. She was later awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List. She carded back-to-back eagles during the second round on the par-5, 11th hole and par-3, 12th hole, which was a hole-in-one. Her next best finishes on the LET were 12th at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and equal 30th at the Evian Masters. Catriona was second on the LET’s Henderson Money List with season’s earnings of €259,871.29 from 3 events and was voted Players’ Player of the Year by her peers on the LET. She also qualified for her fifth European Solheim Cup Team.
